Polygon (POL, formerly MATIC) Price Prediction 2026, 2027, 2028, 2030, 2040 and 2050

Polygon's rebrand from a side-chain on Ethereum to a "payments and real-world asset settlement" thesis was one of the more significant for the crypto space in 2024-2025, as it switched its native token from MATIC to POL. The network's metrics have increased significantly, including stablecoin transfers, transactions and real-world asset (RWA) listings. The price of POL token hasn't kept up. This guide demystifies that divide and provides clear, scenario-based price forecasts for the next 30 years.

Polygon (POL) is what?

Polygon was launched in 2017 as Matic Network and initially aimed to make Ethereum cheaper and faster, by allowing transactions to be processed off the main chain and settled back to the main chain in bulk. In 2021, the project evolved into a family of scaling technologies (a Proof-of-Stake side-chain and zero-knowledge rollups), and changed its name to Polygon. As part of 2024, Polygon also undertook a token migration, swapping MATIC for POL at a 1-to-1 ratio, with the latter being described as a “hyperproductive” token that will enable it to secure multiple chains on Polygon's Aggregation Layer (AggLayer), a system that will bring together liquidity and state across the various connected chains.

In addition to paying gas fees, anyone using POL can stake and secure the Polygon PoS chain, and engage in governance. Polygon's 2026 roadmap, dubbed “Gigagas,” aims to reach a throughput of up to 100,000 transactions per second, which will enable it to offer a competitive cost and speed to conventional payment providers such as Visa, matching their payments capabilities.Polygon has already claimed to have served tens of billions of dollars in monthly stablecoin volume, and with the launch of its “Gigagas” roadmap for 2026, the company is looking to offer a competitive cost and speed in payments use cases to traditional card networks.

Where is POL's price lagging in relation to its usage growth?

There are a number of reasons behind the disconnect between on-chain activity and the token price on Polygon. The first is that POL has approximately 2% yearly token emissions for staking rewards which leaves a residual reduction in token value for those who hold tokens unless they are burnt. Secondly, a lot of token usage is today driven by stablecoin transfers and payment rails, and since transaction fees and thus direct token demand are low by design (the network is cheap and fast because it charges very little, hence the need for heavy usage does not necessarily mean heavy token demand as it does with a chain that charges more for transactions), a lot of its real usage has nothing to do with direct demand for the tokens themselves. Third, Polygon is on a lot of competition from the other Ethereum Layer-2s (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) for mindshare and liquidity.

The Deflationary Turning Point: a High-Velocity Base-Fee burn Net-Deflationary

The ease of use criticism that Polygon's structural 2% annual emission schedule leads to an endless supply wall has been achieved.A major technical milestone has been reached to the ease of use criticism that Polygon's structural 2% annual emission schedule leads to an endless supply wall. The Polygon network has officially entered a net-deflationary phase on a year-to-date (YTD) basis, thanks to its exponential payment velocity.Given the exponential payment velocity, the Polygon network has officially entered into a net-deflationary phase on a year to date (YTD) basis [1]. This structural change fundamentally changes the asset's tokenomics from a headwind of inflation to an active supply sink [1, 3].

The on-chain protocol metrics indicate an ever-growing efficiency of the automated burn engine of the network:

The Supply Cross: On-chain Ledger Tracking reveals that about 105.2 million new POL tokens have been issued through the network to maintain the reward of validators, while more than 107.7 million POL tokens have been burned in the network through its structural base-fee mechanism [1, 2].

Transaction Velocity Arbitrage: If the network is very active, that's a net reduction in the aggregate circulating supply, which means that the base fees subtracted from transactions always exceed the emissions [1]. This was vividlyPolygon, which managed to process a record 198 million transactions in a single month, outperforming other contending public chains in terms of transactional throughput [1], is an example of such a platform.

This ever-changing baseline with respect to supply requires consideration in long-term modelling of scenarios. The cumulative impact of these structural burns will start to impact the overall open market supply of POL in a significant manner [2, 3] if Polygon continues to dominate the mass-market decentralized application (dApp) space.

The base case is that the payments and real-world-asset story for Polygon slowly begins to get better, and it simultaneously begins to capture payments fees (such as the planned buyback or termination of inflationary emissions), and increase its market share. In the bull scenario, the AggLayer and Gigagas roadmap are able to secure Polygon as the top settlement layer for real-world assets and stablecoin transactions.

The following are factors that will impact POL's price, in order of importance:

  • AggLayer and Gigagas roadmap can take the number one position for real world assets and stablecoin transactions for Polygon.

  • Once Polygon's DAO agrees to the three proposals to remove the 2% annual emission from the system and the buybacks with fees that would impact the supply of Polygon's tokens, the proposals will be applied.Once the proposals are accepted by the Polygon's DAO, they will be put into action.

  • The AggLayer will be expanding to help bring liquidity together rather than dividing it, instead of dividing it.

  • Continuing partnerships between enterprises that allow actual payments—Polygon has partnered with Visa, Mastercards, and numerous stablecoin issuers.

The competition between the different Ethereum Layer-2 solutions, as fees and users are easily transferable between different chains that all support EVM compatibility.

But wider health of the Ethereum ecosystem because the value proposition of its entire Polygon proposition is closely linked to the adoption curve of Ethereum.

The third Focus is the "Open Money Stack" and is dedicated to moving beyond the fragmentation of L2 to institutionalise global payments.

Polygon is making a bold move towards the merger of its core focus on architecture. Instead of being a generic, broken apart Layer-2 chain that is vying for meme speculation liquidity, the network has focused its engineering efforts on an enterprise-specific use case, the Polygon Open Money Stack (OMS) [4].

The infrastructure framework will help to reconcile the legacy payment system with secure digital asset layers on-chain [4, 5].

The strategic shift is backed by ground-truth institutional adoption statistics:

  • Global fintech unicorn Revolut has validated its PFI status with a new record, moving $1.2 billion worth of transactions on its stablecoins directly over its PFI Polygon network [6].

Polygon's enterprise metrics indicate that on-chain transactions cost up to 426 times less with the Polygon network compared to Ethereum mainnet, and 4 times less than Solana [6].

  • AggLayer Liquidity Unification: AggLayer from Polygon addresses the issue of fragmented liquidity across chains by ensuring the security of connecting different blockchain networks through zero-knowledge proofs [7]. It enables independent developer chains and enterprise sub-networks to share liquidity and instantly move assets between them, without the end-users having to deal with complex multi-signature bridging protocols [3, 7].

Polygon is integrating the POL token into the deep financial pipelines of the world, by fine-tuning its network architecture specifically for high velocity stablecoins trading, programmatic payroll distribution, and real world assets (RWA) tokenization [4, 6]. This enterprise adoption pipeline is set apart from simply retail-driven speculative tokens [3, 4].

Should You Invest in Polygon?

Polygon has among the highest real-world usage statistics of any Layer-2 network, including claims of being the leader of the monthly stablecoin transfer volume. This is a different type of profile than just speculation. The question -- shared by many infrastructure tokens -- is whether that use will ever lead directly to token holders' value, or whether it will continue to benefit mostly the apps and users of the network. Investors should consider Polygon's fundamentals and the fact that it is still working on bringing price to usage.

The most common questions are addressed in the Frequent Asked Questions (FAQ).

FAQ’s:

  1. Where is MATIC going? So is it POL or is it the same?

Yes. Now, the current price gap between MATIC and POL has caused Polygon to switch its native token from MATIC to POL, and since 2024 and early 2025, Polygon has said that its native token has been "substantially" changed. Now, POL is doing the same that MATIC did in gas, staking and governance, except to ensure a number of chains rather than just one in the expanding Polygon ecosystem.

  2. What is an "AggLayer"?

The Aggregation Layer (AggLayer) is Polygon's interoperability hub that seeks to bring together liquidity and state to many connected blockchains and allow users and developers to communicate with them as if they were one.

  3. Why is the price of POL so low when compared to MATIC's ATH?

Despite Polygon's on-chain activity increasing, the token is down by approximately 90% compared to its 2021 ATH of around $2.92, as an overall multi-year altcoin bear market, constant token emissions and heightened competitive pressures from other Ethereum Layer-2 networks all come into play.

  4. Should you invest in Polygon for the long term?

Polygon has solid real-world adoption (particularly with stablecoin payments), but whether that translates to actual token value is an open question, like with many infrastructure tokens. It should be analyzed in the context of an overall diversified and risk-adjusted crypto allocation.
